The Basics of Search Engine Optimization

SEO breaks down into six areas, and almost every business we talk to is strong in one or two of them and has quietly neglected the rest — usually not on purpose, just because six ongoing disciplines is a lot to run in parallel with a small team. This is the map of the whole territory, so you can see where your gaps actually are.

1. Keyword Research

  • Identify Relevant Keywords: Use tools like Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, or SEMrush to find keywords that your target audience is searching for.
  • Long-Tail Keywords: Focus on long-tail keywords, which are more specific and less competitive, to attract targeted traffic.

2. On-Page SEO

  • Title Tags: Include relevant keywords in your title tags, which should be concise and descriptive.
  • Meta Descriptions: Write compelling meta descriptions that summarize the content of your page and include keywords.
  • Header Tags (H1, H2, H3): Use header tags to structure your content, making it easier for search engines and users to understand.
  • Content Optimization: Ensure your content is high-quality, informative, and includes keywords naturally. Avoid keyword stuffing.
  • Internal Linking: Link to other relevant pages on your site to help search engines understand your site structure and improve navigation.

3. Technical SEO

  • Site Speed: Optimize your website’s loading speed by compressing images, minimizing code, and using a content delivery network (CDN).
  • Mobile-Friendliness: Ensure your site is responsive and provides a good user experience on mobile devices.
  • XML Sitemap: Create and submit an XML sitemap to search engines to ensure all your pages are indexed.
  • Robots.txt File: Use a robots.txt file to guide search engine crawlers on which pages to crawl and index.
  • Secure Website (HTTPS): Use HTTPS to encrypt data and build trust with users and search engines.

4. Off-Page SEO

  • Backlink Building: Acquire high-quality backlinks from reputable websites to boost your site’s authority.
  • Social Media Marketing: Promote your content on social media platforms to increase visibility and attract backlinks.
  • Guest Blogging: Write articles for other websites in your industry to gain exposure and backlinks.

5. Content Marketing

  • Blogging: Regularly publish blog posts on topics relevant to your audience to drive traffic and improve SEO.
  • Video Content: Create engaging videos to explain your products or services and share them on platforms like YouTube.
  • Infographics: Use visual content to simplify complex information and make it more shareable.

6. Local SEO

  • Google My Business: Claim and optimize your Google My Business profile to appear in local search results.
  • Local Keywords: Use keywords that include your location to attract local customers.
  • Local Citations: Ensure your business is listed in local directories with consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone number) information.

If you read this list and immediately knew which two or three areas your business is weakest in, that instinct is usually right — and it's a reasonable starting point for where to focus first, rather than trying to run all six at full intensity at once. Our own approach leans on AI agents specifically for the areas that are ongoing and easy to neglect (technical monitoring, content production, local listing accuracy) so a small team's attention goes to the two or three areas that genuinely need human judgment.
